Johannesburg Airport

I'm sitting in the Johannesburg airport at the moment, having finally sorted out my ticket to Botswana - after months of hemming and hawing and working on plans that didn't work out, I just bought the damn thing in the airport this morning, and I fly out this afternoon.

I got into Jo'burg last night at about 9PM, having spent the previous 30 or so hours in various airplanes and airports - unfortunately, I slept for almost the entire Amsterdam-Johannesburg flight, so I was wired and ready for action when I hit ground. But what was I to do? A driver from the hotel named Godfrey picked me up at the arrival gate, and together with a young Namibian man named Robert, we drove to the hotel. Once arriving at the (peaceful, beautiful, very hospitable!) hotel, I examined my room and then headed to the bar. It was deserted aside from Robert, a flat-screen TV showing "Mickey Blue Eyes," and a sign advising that it was an "honesty bar," whereby you served yourself and then wrote down what you'd taken on a piece of paper. Fair enough. I tried my first Castle Lager, which I assume I'll be drinking a lot more of this year: tasty! Better than Kingfisher, I think. (Sorry, India. At least I still wear my Kingfisher t-shirt all the time.)

Robert and I chatted for a couple of hours and then it was time for bed. But I couldn't sleep. So I lay in bed for six hours or so, listening to the various birds wake up and start calling to each other, and then got out of bed at 7, had breakfast with an Englishman who splits his time between South Africa and Colorado and spent four years of his life sailing around the world, and then dashed to the airport to try and buy a ticket. Success! Now I'm sitting here, and it's just about time to go check in....

Next posts from Botswana!

Off I Go Again

This time:

D'Kar, Botswana. To work with the Komku Trust.

I am leaving Victoria and my dear beloved Canada tomorrow, but I'm going to spend about a week in the US of A before getting to Africa - I'm flying into Johannesburg, South Africa, and then somehow getting to Botswana from there.

The blog will live again!
